History of Canadian Forest Products

Canada boasts the third largest expanse of forest in the world, but a history of irresponsible cultivation has created a volatile environment for the timber industry and Canadian forests in general. The use of Canadian forest products did little to promote new growth, and an essential raping of the wooded landscape for economical gains has brought Canada to a tipping point. It has become necessary to regulate what Canadian forest products produce sustainable results, and which ones are damaging to the forests.

Forests are instrumental in helping to slow global warming by absorbing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, as well as by releasing oxygen back into the atmosphere. Forests also make up the ecosystem that many species of animal depends on. If we forgo salvaging the forests, we will likely see many species become endangered, and perhaps even extinct. The key to reviving Canada’s forests is using sustainable Canadian forest products that give back to the forest even when they take away from it.

For instance, old methods of clearing out lots involved burning and bulldozing, both of which are incredibly damaging to the forest. Burning can result in an out of control fire that destroys acres of healthy forest. Bulldozing often disrupts the soil and everything around the bulldozed area, creating a wasteland in which very little plant life can thrive. New Canadian forest products, such as tree mulchers and stump grinders, can alleviate some of the burden of clearing spaces without the negative consequences. These types of Canadian forest products chip up the wood from displaced trees, dense undergrowth, and tree stumps left behind from logging, and then turn these previously useless things into mulch that helps revitalize the soil.

Mulch from the new Canadian forest products can be spread across the land and protect the soil from erosion while helping it retain moisture. As it slowly decomposes, it helps fertilize the soil which encourages new plant growth. It is these new plant growths that will help forests thrive.

Another deforesting element is disease and insect infestation. These can be extremely detrimental to forests and in a massive forest like Canada’s, stamping out these problems early helps reduce their overall impact. Using some of the newer Canadian forest products, companies are able to go in and mulch any infected trees, grind down their stumps, and that contaminated tree will no longer be able to spread infection. Old methods, like burning a stump, occasionally left behind bits of the trunk, either above ground or down by the roots. Unfortunately, if this piece was still infected, the disease can continue to spread and destroy other trees.

With vigilance and modern Canadian forest products, the outlook for Canada’s forest is brighter. The new regulations that government is placing on sustainable forestry practices are certainly acting as a catalyst for forest healing. The impact will be largely felt in Canada as the shortages of softwood slowly disappear, but reforestation will also impact the entire world. Retaining a thriving forest to combat global warming is important for all of the world’s citizens.
